What Does Internship Sound Like?

Updated: Jan 25

Written by: Anne Frances Frazier, Music Therapy Intern

As a musician and a music therapy intern/aspiring music therapist, it is safe to say that music is all around me all the time. Every era of my life can be defined by a soundtrack representing the experiences and feelings happening at that time, since music so heavily makes up my daily framework. Whether it be a song as my alarm in the morning, my commute hype-up, learning songs for clients, an earworm, my chill mix on the way home, my cooking/kitchen dancing song, my soothing piano and acoustic guitar nighttime playlist, and everything in between- music is everywhere! Since my current season is internship, here are my top tracks and why they’re important to me right now!

This song has been a bit of a mantra for me throughout my internship journey. During the throws of applications and interviews, I would turn to this song for motivation and a cheerful reminder that I’m chasing a dream. Now, I listen to this song as a continued reminder that I’m getting to chase that dream, and that being an intern gets me one step closer!

This song is about the different ways love is observed and felt in everyday life. As a music therapy intern, I’ve been lucky to witness very human moments, and am often reminded of the loving nature of the profession. Being able to recognize these moments and hold onto them are great “whys” and motivators to continue being able to witness them.

This is one of my favorite songs to harmonize with when I’m driving. It’s about bravery, taking a leap, and trusting in it. It says “you got this far, you’ve got this now”, and I love that message. This song also reminds me of one of my best friends from home. We’d listen to it on walks together. Music is a great w

ay for me to hold my people close.

This is the most recent new artist I’ve discovered and become obsessed with. I really enjoy her voice and style. Listening to my preferred music is a great way to keep an experience of music personal to me, since so many of my daily musical experiences are for other people. Upkeep of my own personal relationship with music has been a great way to keep the two separate.

I cannot believe how fast time has been flying, even internship! I somehow am almost halfway through…  I find it much easier to process such complex feelings through song, and this one is beautiful.

I’d love to know, what are some songs that define your life right now and why are they important to you?
