SUMMER CAMP: Sign Language Sensory Camp
Tiny Hands Learning believes that creating a positive and fun learning environment at an early age is the foundation for building confident and joyful learners.
Learning a second language is fun and has many developmental benefits. Did you know that American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most commonly used language in the United States? During this camp, children will learn basic ASL; which stimulates learning through different senses.
The classes in this program are play-based and focus on strategies to support long-term learning, concept development and literacy. We will incorporate games, stories, music and play into each class. Our mission is to bring the benefits of ASL and active learning to children between the ages of 6-12. We aim to optimize language development while giving students the opportunity to excel.
We believe in a multi sensory approach to learning. Studies conducted have shown that appealing to as many senses as possible leads to affective learning, increased memory, and makes learning an enjoyable experience. Language is processed in the left side of our brains while visual stimuli are processed in the right side. Using sign language while also presenting written words with auditory cues engages both sides of the brain simultaneously.
All classes will build upon each other, therefore allowing for repetitive learning which helps children develop skills that become habits. As students become more comfortable with the visual language, they will be encouraged to incorporate more signs into their daily vocabulary ensuring that signing becomes a natural part of every day. Signing at home is the key to success!
Each day at camp will also include music making with Miriam Tart, MT-BC from PMT with break periods for craft projects and a morning snack (provided by camper family).
