By: Miriam Tart, MMT, MT-BC The circle began when I (Miriam, current staff member at Piedmont Music Therapy) began my internship in 2018. Danae Merrick, MT-BC, was my internship supervisor at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital where I completed my 7-month music therapy internship. Danae helped shape the final months of my educational journey before becoming a board-certified music therapist and not only taught me the basics of pediatric medical music therapy, but also supported and provided resources for me to write my thesis (MUSIC THERAPY FOR INFANTS WITH NEONATAL ABSTINENCE SYNDROME IN THE NICU: A QUALITATIVE CONTENT ANALYSIS) as I completed my master’s degree in music therapy through Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. The circle continued as she helped prep me to sit for the board exam and secure my first job as a music therapist here at Piedmont Music Therapy. This past weekend, the circle was complete as Danae attended PMT’s studio recital! Danae now sits on the board of directors at Piedmont Music Therapy as the secretary. It was so fun to see her and reflect on the years of growth and change that have taken place over the last five years. Cheers to the next five years of making music with people in our community!
