PMT CMTE 08/05/18: Philosophy What? Revisiting The Principles and Assumptions That Underlie My Practice

ABSTRACT: The profession of music therapy has undergone extensive changes in approach through the years. In a parallel fashion, practicing music therapists undergo changes in their personal approach and style as they serve new client populations, change facilities, and experience personal development and growth. It is important for music therapists to be mindful of the many approaches and orientations to music therapy practice and embrace the possibility of being able to effectively practice from a variety of perspectives, with the ultimate goal being to best meet the needs of the client. This continuing education course will explore the varied approaches to music therapy
practice and give the professional therapist an opportunity to reflect on their own approach. There are no prerequisites to attend this CMTE event.
- Participants will be able to define the theoretical orientations of music therapy clinical practice: behavioral, cognitive, holistic, humanistic/existential, neuroscience, and psychodynamic (II.A.3).
- Participants will be able to interpret client response and music therapy treatment goals and objectives from at least 3 different theoretical perspectives. (II.A.4).
- Participants will reflect on their personal practice of music therapy and beliefs about music therapy in order to develop or revise their personal philosophy statement about music therapy (IV.A.1).
EVALUATION METHOD: Course evaluation will include the CMTE Course Evaluation Form.
INFO ON PRESENTERS: Meg Johnson is Instructor of Music Therapy and Clinical Coordinator at Queens University of Charlotte. Dr. Pasiali is Associate Professor of Music Therapy at Queens University of Charlotte. Her research interests include early intervention, prevention, resilience, and parent-child
attachment/reciprocity. Her main lecturing areas include improvisation skills, working with children with special needs, family-based therapy, and psychology of music.
In order to make this course accessible to music therapists in the community, as well as finding a way to connect with therapists who practice in the Greater Charlotte area, both presenters have waived honorariums. Because the fee of attending is minimal, they hope this continuing education course is accessible to as many community music
therapists as possible.

LOCATION: Our clinic address is 220 Westinghouse Boulevard, Suite 402, Charlotte, NC 28237. It is conveniently located off of Interstate 77: Exit 1A - there are plenty of parking lot spaces available. On-site bathrooms are handicap accessible plus there’s a kitchenette.
